They were made locally, in Morristown and Rahway and are often found by metal detectorists. Collectors love to spot tiny varieties in the designs. New Jersey Coppers would have circulated at the same time as Draped Bust and Flowing Hair issues in the 1790s, as well as a plethora of foreign (usually British) half pennies from the the 1700s.

  • Reverse: Shield, "E PLURIBUS UNUM"

New Jersey Coppers are classified by "Maris" numbers. These designate the obverse and reverse dies used to make the coin. There are many rare and sought after die pairings, and collectors aim for 100 of 140 varieties. These are regularly found by metal detectorists in New Jersey and surrounding areas.
