What type of coin collection have you come across?

  • An investment
We often see collections where the owner purchased common bullion (silver or gold) coins as close to the "melt" value as possible. These are often from the 1980s or 1990s and contain Eagles, Maple Leaves, Krugerrands or other internationally recognized bullion coins. They're quick and easy to liquidate into cash, and often have appreciated enormously since they were purchased, given how precious metals have recently skyrocketed.
  • A historical collection
These collections are some of the most fascinating to handle. Collectors attempt to purchase coins from a period of history such as the Civil War, American Revolution, World Wars etc. Some of them are museum quality and can be incredibly valuable.
  • A hoard or change bucket
Over the course of the 20th century, hundreds of countries and regions minted hundreds of different coin types. Often coins from before the 1960s retain some silver value, so what looks like junk can end up being valuable. Our experts can help you quickly sift through this material.
  • A denomination set
Many collectors bought brown Dansco or blue Whitman albums to store their coins. These affordable albums arrange coins one-per-year. This makes valuable dates easy to spot, and can help preserve the condition of the coins. With very old albums, the paper will tone the coins. This old toning is highly sought after by collectors so please do not attempt to clean it off.

Start by sorting by face-value: Dollars, Nickels, Dimes, Pennies etc

Order the coins by size and you'll see the large dollars will be the biggest, followed by half dollars, then quarters, nickels, pennies and dimes. If you're lucky you may have other strange coin types like "Half Dimes" or "2-cent Pieces". This will help you determine the spread of values and spot any rarities.

Order the coins by date

Coin designs are constantly changing as different governments come and go. This happens in all countries. Typically, earlier coins are more valuable than newer ones (though there are exceptions). If you have anything from the 1800s then it will probably be valuable. If you have a lot of coins, separating them by decade.
